How to handle Potholes

March 23, 2016

Potholes often emerge after snow or when freezing temperatures subside. With some extra driving care you can learn how to deal with these hazards, saving you money on an damage they can cause to your car.

Firstly potholes happen when water works its way into cracks in the road's surface. When the weather gets cold enough the water freezes and expands. The pavement will then bubble up due to the swelling of the water and ice. Traffic of these spots them leads to the formation of potholes.

The best way to handle potholes is to keep your eyes out for those sneaky potholes and follow these steps:

  • if you cannot avoid the pothole slow down, by reducing your speed you are also reducing the chances of damage to your car
  • Watch out for puddles which might be hiding a pothole
  • Grip the steering wheel firmly when driving over the pothole
  • never break into a pothole
  • if you do hit a pothole, pull over and check for damage

If you see a pothole make sure you report it! You can go onto https://www.gov.uk/report-pothole and report them.
