How to drive safely around horses
April 11, 2016Most drivers will come across horses and riders on the roads at some point, so it is important to know how to handle driving around horses. So here are our top tips!
Horses are very easily scared , something like a speeding car or a barking dog could frighten a horse, its natural reaction will be to get away from whatever scared it. This will be sudden and could take them straight into the road and the path of your car, so be prepared.
If you come across a horse on the road while driving:
- Slow down and be prepared to stop
- When overtaking the horse make sure you have a wide gap (at least a cars width) and pass slowly
- Avoid any actions that could spook the horse like revving your engine
- Watch out for signal from the rider
- Accelerate gently once you have passed the horse
