How to overcome the fear of motorway driving

April 08, 2016

Driving on the motorway can seem pretty scary, especially when you’re a newly qualified driver and it's your first time driving on one.
Remember you can always take extra lessons after you pass or even do a pass plus course to get some experience on the motorways.

- Take someone with you like a friend or family member, this way they can help you out if you get worried and they can reassure you.
-  Plan your journey before setting off , if you don't know the route use a sat nav.
- Make sure you match your speed when joining a motorway, you should accelerate when driving along the slip road and move into the lane when their is an appropriate gap. Usually the traffic will move over the make a space for you.
- Your mirrors are very important so make sure you use them! Every time you change lanes make sure you are using them and check your blind spots too!
- The national speed limit on the motorway is 70 mph , but be careful as there could be signs indicating a lower speed.
- Make sure you stay in the left hand lane unless you're overtaking slower moving traffic.
- When over taking use your mirrors when moving in and out of lanes. Also look out for larger vehicles like lorries changing lanes, they might not be able to see you!
- You need to allow more space to stop as cars are travelling at high speed, so follow the 2 second rule.
- If you are feeling tired take regular breaks, find a service station get a drink, some food and get some fresh air.
- When leaving the motorway move into the left hand lane and signal when you are about to start leaving, this way it will inform other drivers on what you are doing.
