A test drive is a crucial part of the car buying process, helping you see what a car will be like to live with. Here are our tips for getting the most out of a test drive



Firstly you need are interested in several different models try to arranges the test drives for the same day. This way you will remember how different the cars feels to drive. 

Ask to drive the exact model you're interested in.

Take your time, you can usually spend around an hour on a test drive so really take in the ride. Drive around town and country roads so you can see how it feels in different environments. 

Also the longer you spend in the car to more you can check out how comfortable the seats are.


If you're buying a family car then take your children with you to see if they fit comfortably in the car. 
When buying used or nearly new, you need to pay more attention. Make sure the paintwork and interior are in good condition. And look out for dents and scratches, worn tyres, and faults with the car. 

Once you've test driven the car, the sales staff will be keen to sell the car. But if you have any doubts, it’s best to give yourself time to think. And don’t be afraid to ask for a second test drive if you’re still unsure. 


Car Dealers will have special cover in place but there's a good chance you won't be covered if you test drive a car sold privately.
Check your own car insurance – you are looking for the words on the policy that says you can 'drive another car with the owner's permission'. This is known as DOC or Driving Other Cars cover.
